How to start a podcast with no audience

The number one reason Las Vegas business owners do not start a podcast is this: they think they need an audience first. They do not. In fact the entire premise is backwards. For a business podcast the audience is not the point. The relationship is the point.

The audience-first myth

Consumer podcasters — the ones making money through advertising — do need a large audience. Their revenue model depends on it. The more downloads they get the more they can charge advertisers.

But a business owner using a podcast as a relationship tool has a completely different model. Their revenue comes from clients and referrals. And clients and referrals come from relationships. Not from download counts.

A financial advisor in Henderson Nevada does not need 10,000 listeners. They need 10 realtors to trust them enough to send referrals. A podcast that reaches exactly those 10 realtors — even if nobody else ever listens — is a massive success.

The question is never how many people are listening. The question is whether the right people are having the right conversations with you.

How to get results from episode one

Step 1 — Choose your first guest strategically

Your first guest should not be chosen for their audience size or their name recognition. They should be chosen because the relationship with them is genuinely valuable to your business. Choose a current client with a great story. The episode will be great, the relationship will deepen, and you will have powerful social proof content from day one.

Step 2 — Use the episode as a relationship tool immediately

Do not just post the episode and hope people find it. Use it actively.

Send it to your guest with a personal message the day it goes live. Tell them something specific you took away from the conversation. That follow up is where the relationship solidifies.

Send it to three or four specific people who you know would benefit from hearing it or who you want to impress. Not a mass blast. Targeted personal messages.

Step 3 — Let the guest carry the episode to their audience

When your guest shares the episode with their network you get exposure to exactly the right people — their audience, which overlaps significantly with yours.

This is why choosing the right guests matters more than building your own audience. A guest with 500 highly relevant followers sharing your episode is worth more than 5,000 random downloads.

Step 4 — Stack the relationships over time

One episode is a conversation. Twelve episodes is a relationship network. Forty eight episodes is a business asset.

The power of a business podcast is not in any single episode. It is in the compounding effect of consistent relationship building over time. Every guest becomes a thread in a growing web of trust, credibility, and mutual benefit.

What to say when people ask how many listeners you have

This comes up. Someone you invite on will ask how big your audience is. Here is the honest and confident answer:

We are focused on quality over quantity. Our audience is specifically Las Vegas and Henderson business owners and the professionals who serve them. Every episode reaches exactly the people it is designed for.

That is a true, confident, and completely defensible answer. And it is a better podcast strategy than chasing download numbers.
